Is that FedEx delivery text a scam?

Bewary fraud research, published by Andrey Khayrullaev, founder. How we research scam patterns.

Example text message

FedEx: We could not deliver your parcel. Reschedule and pay the 1.95 handling fee: fedex-reschedule.shop

SCAM

Usually yes. FedEx states it plainly: it does not request personal information about your account credentials or identity through unsolicited mail, email or text. So a message asking you to pay a small fee or confirm details through a link is not a delivery problem, it is a card-harvesting page wearing a delivery problem's clothes.

How to spot the FedEx scam

  • It asks for account or identity details you did not offer. FedEx's own wording is that it does not request, via unsolicited mail, email or text, any personal information pertaining to your account credentials or identity.
  • The link is not fedex.com. Lookalikes such as fedex-reschedule.shop put the familiar word first and the domain nobody checks last.
  • There is a small handling, reschedule or customs fee. Under a couple of pounds or dollars is deliberate: cheap enough to pay without thinking.
  • The tracking number is missing, or it does not work when you type it into fedex.com yourself.
  • You are not expecting a FedEx parcel. These are sent in bulk to numbers, not to customers.
  • It presses you to act within hours, because a day's delay is enough to check the order you actually placed.

What to do now

  1. Do not tap the link. Track the parcel at fedex.com or in the FedEx app, reached yourself.
  2. Cross-check against the retailer's own confirmation email. A genuine delivery exists somewhere other than a text message.
  3. Report it: FedEx asks for phishing to be forwarded to abuse@fedex.com, and forwarding to 7726 (SPAM) lets your carrier act on the sender.
  4. If you have already entered card details, call your bank, dispute the charge and freeze the card. FedEx also runs a fraud line on 1.800.584.2681 for confirmed unauthorised charges on a FedEx account.
  5. Delete the message afterwards so nobody else in the house taps it.
