How to spot the Cash App scam

• The link is a lookalike: cashapp-secure-verify.com, cash-app-support.net, cashapp-alert.co. The real app lives on cash.app, so read the root domain at the end, not the reassuring word at the front.
• It wants your sign-in code. Cash App states its representatives will never ask for your password, PIN, full card number, or sign-in code. That code is not a formality, it is the account.
• There is a phone number in the message, or you are told to call one. Cash App runs a single support line, 1 (800) 969-1940, open 8 AM to 9:30 PM ET, and says plainly it is "the only phone number customers can call for Cash App Support". Any other number is not Cash App.
• That line is inbound only. You call them. A call arriving out of the blue claiming to be Cash App support is the scam, no matter what the caller ID shows, because caller ID is trivially spoofed.
• Whoever answers asks for a "test" transaction, or wants a payment sent back to be refunded. Cash App says it will never ask you to do a test transaction over the phone, social media, or by any other means.
• "Funds will be held" is invented pressure. Cash App does not freeze a balance by text and then wait for you to reply.
• The help came from a support account in your replies or DMs. Cash App's official accounts are @CashApp on Instagram, X and TikTok, plus @CashSupport on X, u/CashAppAndi on Reddit and SquareCash on Facebook. Impersonating support on social media is a known and rising Cash App attack.
• You went looking for the number yourself. Fake support numbers are planted in search results and social replies precisely so that you dial them, which makes the call feel like your idea rather than theirs.

What to do now

1. Do not tap the link and do not call any number in the text. Open Cash App from your home screen: a real problem with your account is visible inside the app.
2. Turn on Security Lock, which Cash App recommends, so every payment needs your passcode, Face ID or Touch ID rather than just an unlocked phone.
3. If you entered anything, change your Cash App password and your linked bank password from a different device, and sign out of other sessions.
4. Call your bank and card issuer on the number printed on your card, and have them watch the linked account now, while the transfer can still be stopped.
5. Report any unauthorized transfer to Cash App in the app and keep the reference. Under the CFPB's January 2025 order, Block must investigate unauthorized transfers and pay redress where it is owed, and a documented report is what starts that clock.
6. Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) so your carrier can act on the sender, then delete it. Contact support only through the app or cash.app/help.
